CBD Oil for Inflammation

As we have seen in previous articles, CBD Oil has the potential to alleviate pain and anxiety symptoms. Today, we’ll do research into the effects CBD Oil has on inflammation. If you are someone who struggles with inflammation, please read ahead to determine whether or not CBD can help your situation.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation in general, is not well understood. Before we talk about CBD, it’s important that we have a grasp of what inflammation actually is, and why it can be such a problematic issue.

Inflammation is a natural part of the body’s immune response.

That is, inflammation in itself is not the enemy. Inflammation is your body’s defense against a “perceived” threat.

In inflammation, white blood cells protect us from infection by bacteria and viruses.

Inflammation is actually a key part of the healing process.

When Does Inflammation Occur?

Inflammation occurs when something triggers white blood cells within your body.

Chemicals from these white blood cells are released into the bloodstream or affected areas.

This release causes more blood to rush to the affected areas, resulting in redness and warmth (common signs of inflammation).

Some of the chemical may cause a leak of fluids which can result in swelling.

This process may stimulate nerve areas in these regions and cause pain.

What are Symptoms of Inflammation

Symptoms are dependent on the type of inflammation you have, acute or chronic.

The symptoms of acute inflammation are as follows:

Pain - The affected areas are likely to be painful to the touch because chemicals that stimulate nerve endings are released.

Redness - Redness occurs because blood capillaries are fuller than usual.

Immobility - There may be loss in the range of motion of these areas.

Swelling - Swelling is caused by a buildup of fluid.

Heat - Heat is produced with increased blood flow.

Symptoms of chronic inflammation are different than those of acute inflammation. They are:

  • Fatigue
  • Chest Pain
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Joint Pain

Acute vs. Chronic Inflammation

Acute inflammation is inflammation that occurs over a short space of time. Signs and symptoms normally only present for a few days.

A few examples of acute inflammation are:

  • Sore throat
  • Scratch or cut on the skin
  • Physical trauma
  • Tonsillitis

Chronic inflammation refers to long-term inflammation that can last up to years. A few possible reasons for chronic inflammation include:

  • Failure to eliminate the instigator of acute inflammation
  • Autoimmune disorders that attack normal healthy tissues, mistaking healthy tissue for a harmful pathogen
  • Exposure to mild levels of irritants over time, like industrial chemicals

Some examples of conditions associated with chronic inflammation are:

  • Asthma
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Hepatitis
  • Chronic Peptic Ulcer

While inflammation helps trigger the healing process, chronic inflammation can lead to several diseases such as some cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, and atherosclerosis.

Inflammation Treatment

While we will consider CBD Oil as a treatment for inflammation later in this article, we will briefly cover other common treatments.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS, are designed to help minimize the pain from inflammation.

NSAIDS counteract an enzyme involved in inflammation. This helps to prevent and reduce pain.

Some common NSAIDS include ibuprofen and aspirin.

Unfortunately, NSAIDS can have negative side effects including kidney damage and increase risk of stroke and heart attack.

Corticosteroids, like Cortisol, are a steroid hormones that prevent some of the processes for inflammation.

There are two sets of Corticosteroids, Glucocorticoids and Mineralocorticoids.

Glucocorticoids are prescribed for many conditions, including:

  • Arthritis
  • IBS
  • Asthma
  • Systemic Lupus
  • Hepatitis

Mineralocorticoids are used to replace important hormones in patients with adrenal insufficiency.

You must be careful with Glucocorticoids though, as they can cause high blood pressure, low blood potassium levels, and connective tissue weakness.

Hyssop: Hyssop is mixed with other herbs for the treatment of lung conditions and inflammation.

Ginger: Ginger is a centuries old herbal treatment used for dyspepsia, constipation, colic, and other gastrointestinal problems.

Turmeric: As well as being an ingredient in many Hemp Bombs products, Turmeric has been used to treat arthritis, Alzheimer’s, and some other inflammatory conditions.

Now that we know have some background on inflammation, we will have some better footing to talk about how CBD Oil can affect inflammation.

CBD Oil and Inflammation

CB2 and Inflammation

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is the second most active chemical in the Hemp plant.

Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it doesn’t produce the “high” associate with marijuana.

While CBD is not psychoactive, it does have a noticeable effect on your body’s Endocannabinoid System, a system meant for balance and regulation.

Your Endocannabinoid System has a network of receptors spread all throughout the body, known as CB1 AND CB2.

CB1 has a hand in perception, mood, sleep, memory, and appetite. This receptor is more affected by THC than CBD.

CB2 however, is involved immune response. As we pointed out earlier in the article, inflammation is a part of your immune system’s defense system and important to the healing process.

Because inflammation is tied to immune response, it’s the CB2 receptor that holds promise for relief.

When CBD binds to the overactive immune cells involved in inflammation, a protein is created called caspase.

Once activated, caspase sends a signal that will induce immune cell death, halting inflammation.

There is another way that CBD can control inflammation.

That is, through a process called ROS, or reactive oxygen species.

What happens, is that CBD stimulates immune cells and increases the generation of ROS, which speeds up oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress leads to the death of the cells contributing to inflammation, including the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

CBD Oil and Neuroinflammation

Neuroinflammation is inflammation of the nervous tissue. It has multiple causes including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, and autoimmunity.

It is regarded as chronic, rather than acute, inflammation of the central nervous system (cns).

It’s chronic inflammation that is associated with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Multiple Sclerosis.

CBD Oil works against neuroinflammation in a variety of ways, including:

  • Induction of apoptosis or cell death
  • Lowering excitotoxicity
  • Enhancing vasodilation
  • Inhibition of cell proliferation
  • Suppression of cytokine production
  • Induction of T-regulatory cells

Like was mentioned earlier, it’s CB2 receptors’ role in the immune system that is key to these anti-inflammatory effects.

Researchers suggest that Cannabidiol, the main constituent of CBD Oil, has significant potential for immunosuppressive (less inflammation) effects with negative side effects.

Research Studies on CBD and Inflammation

While we’ve dug into the bio-mechanics of CBD Oil and inflammation, we haven’t touched on many of the research studies supporting it.

A study from the Imperial College of London showed that CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory.

When dosed with 5mg/kg of CBD, mice’s inflammation was reduced up to 50%.

A 2011 study from GW Booz analyzed the effect CBD Oil has on oxidative stress. The conclusion was that CBD is effective and reduces the risk of organ damage.

Like with most research on CBD Oil, more needs to be done before conclusions can be drawn. However, the research around inflammation is among the most convincing. CBD Oil seems to have a strong reductive effect on acute and chronic inflammation as well as neuroinflammation.
